FAQ
How does the City of Norfolk Government determine pricing for snow removal services?
Snow removal services for municipal infrastructure like primary routes, bridges, and downtown streets are funded through city taxes and budgets, with no direct charges to residents for these public operations. We prioritize clearing arterial roads and critical routes first based on established protocols to ensure public safety during winter weather. Residents needing assistance during severe conditions can contact our Public Works team for support without incurring personal costs.
Are you licensed and insured for snow removal work?
The City of Norfolk Government operates all snow and ice removal with full municipal licensing and insurance coverage as required for public works operations. Our fleet of plows and spreaders meets all safety and regulatory standards for city-managed services. This ensures comprehensive protection for our teams and the public infrastructure we maintain.
Does the City of Norfolk Government handle snow removal on residential streets?
We focus snow removal on primary routes, bridges, downtown streets, and arterial roads to keep critical city pathways open and minimize disruptions. Residential streets receive attention based on severity and available resources after priority areas are cleared. Our Public Works team coordinates these efforts to support the entire community during winter storms.
What is your typical timeline and arrival window for snow removal?
We deploy our fleet immediately upon winter weather alerts, starting with priority routes and progressing based on storm intensity and accumulation levels. Expect initial clearing on main arteries within hours of snowfall beginning, with ongoing passes as needed. Scheduling follows city-wide coordination to address the most impacted areas first for maximum safety.
What does the City of Norfolk Government do for cleanup after snow removal?
Snow and ice are pushed to the sides of roads or spread with materials to melt residues, leaving streets passable without hauling away every flake. We manage debris through regular plowing cycles that incorporate windrows into safe configurations along curbs. This approach keeps municipal routes functional while reducing hazards from piled accumulations.
Why is your professional snow removal approach safer than DIY methods?
Our coordinated operations use specialized plows and spreaders across a full fleet to treat extensive routes efficiently, avoiding the risks of personal equipment failures on icy surfaces. Public Works prioritizes bridges and high-traffic areas where DIY efforts can't match the scale or speed needed for safety. Professional methodology prevents accidents by ensuring consistent clearing and de-icing on critical infrastructure.
