5 months agoIn our opinion, this company was a leader in the local industry for many years. We have used them solely for maintenance and installation for nearly 20 years. Recently when we had an equipment failure (blower motor), we called Berkeley and received a same day appointment. The technician arrived on time. The diagnosis was an expensive part needed replacement and on an aging system, the technician replaced full unit replacement. The cost was >30% of a 10 yo system, understandable recommendation. The unit was a heat pump packaged unit, meaning the compressor and blower are in a single unit outside of the home - and not a split system with the blower inside. We paid a diagnostic fee, normal price per industry standards. When the sales team called, we were pleasantly surprised that the owner (Gordon Dinger) was our point of contact. This is unfortunately where things went wrong and we started to see many red flags. We were provided with a quote to replace the system, the quote was a singular option without any tiers to allow decisions to be made in regarding price, recommended middle ground, or efficiency. We have always received options and been provided with expert guidance on how to choose what was the right fit for the customer. We asked for some options, because we were quoted for a unit that had a lower efficiency rating than the old unit and was a different brand. Gordon offered one additional unit that was a single stage (one speed) and we were replacing a variable speed system. So we were unable to compare the equipment. Gordon began pushing us to order immediately because of low stock locally. Lastly, when asked about switching from an electric AUX heat to natural gas (as we recently had our home plumbed for natural gas and had pipe and fixtures nearby the HVAC unit. He said that package units of that type do not exist, and reiterated that time was running out to get last remaining HVAC system in the region (the model he offered). The pushy, palatably inflated sense of urgency, lack of product knowledge, and single selection quote were our indicators to cease the conversation. We never completed the sales process. We asked for a second opinion from another company, and were provided with the service and attention that we expected, but did not receive from Berkeley. Essentially, we were left with the impression that while Gordon has a successful business, that something has changed and the warm welcoming company that we trusted for many years is no longer that. This may be a unique experience, but we chose to trust our intuition and to go with another company. -

FAQ
Does Berkeley Heating and Air Conditioning provide free estimates for AC replacements?
We determine pricing through thorough inspections of your existing unit and home setup to ensure accurate quotes for AC installations or replacements. Estimates are provided after evaluating factors like system size, ductwork condition, and any necessary modifications. This approach helps homeowners understand the full scope and avoid unexpected costs during HVAC projects.
Are you licensed and insured for HVAC work?
Berkeley Heating and Air Conditioning carries the necessary licensing, bonding, and insurance required for HVAC services in the local area, including handling refrigerants per EPA standards. We meet state and local codes to protect homeowners from liability during installations, repairs, and maintenance. Proof of these credentials is available upon request to verify our qualifications.
Does Berkeley Heating and Air Conditioning service and install Trane and Carrier HVAC units?
We handle installations and servicing of Trane and Carrier units, including residential condensers, commercial systems, furnaces, and hydronic heating setups. Our technicians perform detailed inspections to ensure proper sizing, airflow, and performance matching manufacturer specifications. This covers both home and rental properties in Hanahan and Goose Creek, SC.
What is your typical response time and scheduling process?
We respond quickly to service requests, even on holidays like Memorial Day, with technicians arriving in coordinated windows to minimize wait times. Scheduling starts with a phone consultation to assess urgency, followed by prompt dispatch for repairs or inspections. Expect clear communication on arrival estimates and job timelines to fit your needs.
Does Berkeley Heating and Air Conditioning clean up after HVAC installations and repairs?
We leave your property clean and tidy after every job, removing old equipment, debris, and waste from installations or repairs. Technicians use protective measures like drop cloths during work to safeguard floors and surroundings. This ensures your home or rental is returned to its original condition once the system is running smoothly.
Why should I hire you instead of attempting HVAC repairs myself?
Our decades of experience enable thorough inspections that identify issues like faulty refrigerant levels or duct problems, which DIY efforts often miss and can worsen. Professional tools and methods ensure safe handling of electrical components, gases, and heavy units, preventing hazards like shocks or leaks. Maintenance contracts provide ongoing checks to extend system life, offering better long-term efficiency than one-off fixes.
