14 years agoWe have used J.M. Heating & A/C & Refrigeration several times. Two technicians have been to our house: Jerry and Mike. The pattern has been Mike is quick and $600. Here is what happened . The heating and cooling company was summonsed by my wife to fix our furnace that was not coming on. I had switched the system off for 30 hours while we were out of town and upon returning the heating did not start up. The electronic thermostat appeared fine but the heat would not come on. The technician evaluated and diagnosed an ignitor problem which he replaced. However, when it still would not work he then discovered that the thermostat malfunctioned and said he was going to get another one. At no point were costs discussed. My wife grew concerned when the repair (including his going out to get a new thermostat) began to drag for many hours (final labor charge 3.5 hours). She was mortified when she received a bill for $631.35. I called the following morning to complain that such an expensive undertaking was performed without warning us so that we could have gotten a second opinion. Either the technician was incompetent or the problem was unusually difficult. I do not know. But I am furious that I was not given the opportunity to seek a second opinion (with quote). I expressed my thoughts and asked for a 50% reduction on labor and a 10% reduction on parts which would make it $437.63. The technician refused. What would you do.?

FAQ
Does J.M Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration offer free estimates for HVAC installations?
We provide detailed written estimates that outline equipment, labor, and any permits needed for your HVAC project. These estimates help you understand the full scope before committing. Factors like home size, existing ductwork, and system type determine the final pricing to ensure proper sizing and efficiency.
Are you licensed and insured for HVAC work?
J.M Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration holds the necessary licensing and insurance required for HVAC installations and maintenance in Pittsburgh. Our team carries general liability and workers' compensation coverage to protect your property during service. We also comply with local permitting and EPA 608 certification standards for handling refrigerants.
Does J.M Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration install mini-split systems and ductwork?
We install mini-split systems like Mitsubishi Electric units for both indoor and outdoor components, as well as residential condensers from brands such as Goodman and Trane. Our services extend to repairing and installing HVAC ductwork to optimize airflow and system performance. These installations suit various home setups, from whole-house systems to targeted zoning.
What is your typical timeline for HVAC installations?
We schedule installations based on your availability, with most residential projects completing in one to two days after the estimate approval. Technicians arrive within agreed time windows and coordinate any permitting upfront to avoid delays. Expect a walkthrough at the end to explain operation and basic maintenance.
Does J.M Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration clean up after HVAC service?
We use drop cloths and shoe covers to protect your home during installations and maintenance. All debris, packaging, and old parts get removed and disposed of properly at the job's end. Your space is left clean, with no mess behind from ductwork modifications or unit setups.
Why is hiring you safer than attempting HVAC installation as a DIY project?
Professional HVAC installation follows precise load calculations and duct inspections to match equipment to your home's needs, preventing inefficiencies or failures that DIY often causes. We verify refrigerant charges, electrical connections, and airflow to code, reducing risks like leaks or fire hazards. This approach extends system life and maintains warranties that DIY voids.
