3 years agoI was a customer of Evans Heating & Air for ~8 years, but after recent failures won't continue with their service. My home was built new in 2012, and was under warranty for HVAC services the first few years with the contractor used by the home builder. I began working w/Evans Heating & Air in 2015. From 2015-2022, Evans did semi-annual checks on my heat pump + air handler per my annual service contracts with them, except for 2019. Until 2022 Evans never noted any system problems, and my total service plan cost before 2022 was ~$1,100. In March 2022 Evans performed my spring service and indicated no system problems. In August 2022 I scheduled a service call when my heat pump did not properly cool my home. The technician said my heat pump was low on refrigerant, and charged me accordingly (~$300). Of note, Evans did not diagnose any other system issues in August 2022. In November 2022 Evans Heating and Air performed my fall service (per my paid contract), and again indicated no system problems. Yet, in December 2022 I paid an electric utility bill of $333, a level rarely seen in >10 years at this home. I spoke with Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (utility provider), who noted my electric usage in December 2022 was ~30% higher than December 2021, yet, in December 2022 temperatures were not 30% colder. REC said something was likely wrong with my HVAC system, so I scheduled yet another emergency call with Evans Heating and Air on 12/27/2022. On 12/27/2022 Evans again said there were no system problems, and it took a subsequent call from REC to Evans to have a more senior technician come to my home. On 01/06/2023 Evans Heating and Air finally diagnosed a coil leak in my air handler, and quoted a repair cost of ~$3,500 (service call on 01/06/2023 cost me $149). So, Evans came to my home on 03/12, 08/05, 11/11, and 12/27 in 2022, and on these 4 occasions failed to diagnose the real problem. And, had Evans been cleaning the coils on my air handler via semi-annual checks since 2015, this failure could have been averted before winter 2022. I have neighbors with homes and HVAC systems older than mine, who have never had HVAC problems. Yet, I paid for annual maintenance with Evans Heating & Air since 2015, and likely only got flashlight checks from them. And, my heating bill for January 2023 was $503.43. I have since had a new HVAC system installed by another HVAC company, and I will work with them going forward. Evans HVAC failed to do their due diligence. I will not recommend them to anyone! -

9 years agoI've been very happy with them. We have two heat pumps so it's more expensive. One of the nice thing that they do that I've never had before is that they bring new filters. They don't charge extra for that. They are very good at coming in their window of time. -

10 years agoIt was $169 per heat pump and we have two heat pumps. It was rather high, but I guess that's how everybody does it. We've been quite happy with them. -

10 years agoThey originally came out early April. That's when they discovered that there was something wrong with one heat pump. They probably came back the next week and then, after that, they had somebody else come out maybe, two weeks after that, maybe at the end of April, to make sure everything was working correctly. It was over $6000. We were very happy.

FAQ
How does Evans Heat & Air determine pricing for HVAC services like heat pump maintenance?
We base pricing on the specific needs of your system, such as the number of heat pumps and required maintenance tasks. For example, heat pump services are priced per unit to cover labor and parts accurately. This approach ensures transparency, with costs reflecting the work involved without hidden fees.
Are you licensed and insured for HVAC and electrical work?
Evans Heat & Air carries the necessary licensing, bonding, and insurance required for HVAC contracting and electrical services in our area. This protects homeowners from liability in case of property damage or worker injuries during jobs. We comply with local regulations and EPA standards for handling refrigerants.
Does Evans Heat & Air handle specific tasks like replacing dirty air filters, repairing HVAC circuit boards, and installing mini-split units?
We manage a range of hands-on HVAC tasks including air filter replacements for very dirty units, circuit board repairs with components like capacitors, and installations of outdoor units such as Samsung mini-splits. Our team also services compressors in commercial units and works on electrical control panels. These services keep heating and cooling systems running efficiently year-round.
What is your typical timeline and arrival window for scheduling HVAC jobs?
Evans Heat & Air schedules jobs with clear arrival windows, often responding promptly to issues like heat pump problems discovered during initial visits. We coordinate follow-up services within a week if needed, involving specialized technicians for complex repairs. This process minimizes downtime while setting realistic expectations for completion.
What happens to debris and waste after Evans Heat & Air completes an HVAC service or installation?
We remove all old filters, repaired components, and installation debris from your property after every job. Our crew ensures the work area, including around control panels and outdoor units, is left clean and organized. Proper disposal prevents any mess and maintains a safe environment in your home.
Why is your professional approach to HVAC maintenance and installation safer and better than DIY?
Our expertise ensures proper handling of electrical wiring, refrigerant, and system components like circuit boards, avoiding risks such as shocks or inefficient setups common in DIY attempts. We perform thorough inspections and use correct procedures for tasks like filter changes and compressor servicing, which extend equipment life. Professional tools and knowledge prevent voided warranties and safety hazards that homeowners might overlook.
