FAQ
How does City of Newark, NJ - City Hall determine snow removal priorities during a storm?
We prioritize emergency routes first to ensure fire, police, and ambulance access throughout the city. Once those critical corridors are clear, we deploy our fleet of over 70 plows and trucks to residential streets, beginning removal once snow accumulation reaches two inches. This staged approach helps us serve the entire city efficiently while keeping life-safety routes open from the start.
What equipment and resources do you use for snow removal?
City of Newark, NJ - City Hall operates a fleet of more than 70 plows and trucks dedicated to snow removal operations. Our equipment is designed to clear streets from curb to curb, removing accumulated snow and ice to restore safe passage for residents and emergency vehicles. We coordinate timing and deployment to maximize coverage across all neighborhoods.
Does City of Newark, NJ - City Hall handle sidewalk and hydrant clearing during winter storms?
We coordinate with residents to keep sidewalks, hydrants, and storm drains accessible during winter weather. While our primary focus is clearing street surfaces, maintaining access to these critical infrastructure points is essential for emergency response and drainage. We ask residents to help by avoiding parking on streets during active snow events so our equipment can work efficiently.
How long does it typically take for your team to clear my street after a snowstorm?
City of Newark, NJ - City Hall begins snow removal once accumulation reaches two inches, with emergency routes cleared first. Residential street clearing follows based on neighborhood priority and storm intensity. Timing varies depending on storm duration and total snowfall, but our goal is to restore safe passage as quickly as possible once conditions allow.
What should I do with my car to help City of Newark, NJ - City Hall clear snow more effectively?
Park off-street during snowstorms to significantly speed up our removal efforts. When vehicles are parked along curbs, our plows cannot clear the full width of the street, and we may need to return multiple times. By moving your car to a driveway, garage, or off-street lot during winter weather, you help us complete the job faster and more thoroughly for your entire neighborhood.
Why is professional snow removal better than handling it myself?
Professional snow removal requires specialized equipment, trained operators, and coordinated logistics that individual homeowners cannot replicate. Our fleet approach ensures consistent, systematic coverage across the entire city rather than scattered, incomplete clearing. Additionally, professional removal prioritizes emergency access and public safety, which requires city-wide planning and communication that protects everyone in the community.
